Your Choice Benefits:
They're called Choice Benefits because that's what you get - a choice. Participation in the following programs is determined by your employment status; most require an employee contribution through payroll deduction.

  • Medical Coverage - We offer both a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) and POS (Point of Service) plan from which to choose, depending on an employee's individual healthcare needs. The plans include a prescription drug benefit and behavioral health coverage. The POS plan includes vision coverage.
  • Life Insurance - An amount equal to your annual base salary is available at no cost to you. You may purchase additional coverage.
  • Long Term Disability - If you become totally disabled for longer than five months, optional Long Term Disability will pay up to either fifty or sixty percent of your salary, once criteria are met.
  • Long Term Care Insurance - This program pays for the daily care of employees or family members needing nursing home or assisted living care.
  • Dental Coverage - We offer both a DHMO (Dental Health Maintenance Organization) and PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) dental plan from which to choose.
  • Dependent Life Insurance - If you want coverage, you have several amounts to choose from for coverage of a spouse and/or children.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts - Two plans are available to pay for certain healthcare and dependent care expenses with tax-free money.

Your Basic Benefits:

  • Retirement Programs - Three different programs are available. In the Money Purchase Pension Plan, we contribute money to your retirement account based on your base salary and years of service. The 401K Salary Deferral Program is an optional plan that allows you to contribute up to fifty percent of your salary. HCA matches fifty percent of the first three percent you contribute. In the Stock Bonus Plan, the company contributes one-half percent of your salary to purchase HCA stock.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) - This program pays you when you are away from work for vacations, holidays, short-term illness and unexpected absences. As a new full-time employee you accumulate twenty-three days of PTO time a year; part-time employees who work at least twenty hours a week receive eight days a year.
  • Extended Illness Bank (EIB) - As a full-time employee you accumulate six days of EIB a year for use if you are unable to work because of an extended medical condition. (EIB pay begins after an employee misses three consecutive days of work.)

Employment News...

HCA Richmond Offers Internship in Operating Room Nursing

With the average age of OR nurses being higher than 49, the national average for all registered nurses, it is estimated that ORs will lose between 35 and 40 percent of their nurses within the next five years.

In an effort to offset the specific effects of the nursing shortage on the pool of available OR nurses, HCA Richmond Health System is looking to increase that pool through an Internship in Operating Room Nursing.

The internship will begin on April 21 and will utilize the Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ developed by the Association of peri-Operative Registered Nurses. The program combines didactic training and clinical rotations with a preceptor through HCA Richmond's four hospitals — CJW Medical Center, Retreat Hospital, John Randolph Medical Center, and Henrico Doctors' Hospital. It will last from six to nine months depending on individual progress.

Applicants must have at least one year of hospital experience, and there are seven available openings. At the end of the program and in consultation with both the hospitals' OR directors and the clinical educator, students will be placed at the HCA Richmond hospital that is the right match for them.

To read more about the program, you can view the job posting and apply online.

Retreat and Hospice of Virginia Open First Inpatient Unit in Central Virginia

Retreat Hospital is now home to central Virginia's first Hospice of Virginia Inpatient Unit. Hospice of Virginia, the state's leading hospice-care provider and an American Hospice company, partnered with Retreat to open the state-of-the-art facility, where terminally ill patients can receive palliative care and their families can comfortably deal with end-of-life issues.

"We are very pleased to and honored to be Hospice of Virginia's first inpatient unit in central Virginia," said Bill Caldwell, CEO of Retreat Hospital. "We look forward to the opportunity to provide top-quality hospice services to area patients and their families in our hospital setting."

Betty Rufus, RN, CHPN clinical director, added, "Hospice of Virginia is thrilled to be able to expand the end-of-life options available to the Richmond community. Our investment in quality staff and technology allows us to provide the best end-of-life care available for the communities we serve."

The new inpatient hospice unit aims to maximize the quality of life for terminally ill patients and their families by providing comprehensive medical, psychosocial, and spiritual care delivered by a multidisciplinary team.

Two Retreat Nurses Receive HBO Certification

Mila and Janice After the Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Unit at Retreat Hospital received accreditation from the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT) in 2006, two nurses decided to pursue Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBO) certification for themselves. Mila Lofgren, RN (pictured, left), and Janice Anderson, LPN (right), took the HBO exam last summer and passed, earning HBO certification.

The NBDHMT was established to support professionals in the fields of hyperbaric medicine, hyperbaric chamber operation, and diving medicine. Their certification programs, including HBO certification, are internationally recognized as the standard for training those in the hyperbaric and diving medicine fields.

While there are 1,450 Diving Medical Technicians and Certified Hyperbaric Technologists worldwide, there are only 560 Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurses (CHRN). Retreat Hospital is proud to have no fewer than three of those CHRNs: Mila, Janice, and Schella Loussaint, clinical coordinator of the Wound Healing Center.
